Where can I find my closest Bitcoin ATM in Red Deer?
In the lobby of the Super 8 on north Gaetz
Bitcoin4U, a Canadian cryptocurrency exchange, has its Red Deer machine inside Super 8 by Wyndham Red Deer, which stands on Gaetz Avenue a short way south of the 77 Street lights, on the north side of the river. There is parking at the door, and inside, the white kiosk sits by the lobby wall under the framed, postcard-style "Greetings from Alberta" print. It sells any of six coins for Canadian bills: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, USD Coin, Solana and XRP.
The north side and the towns beyond it
If you live in Normandeau or Kentwood, you probably drive this stretch of Gaetz already. Drivers from Blackfalds and Lacombe come in on Highway 2A and reach the north end of Gaetz first, and drivers from Sylvan Lake reach Gaetz on Highway 11 at 67 Street or on Highway 11A at the north end of town. Red Deer sits midway on the Calgary-Edmonton corridor, about 150 km from each. Heading north on the QE II, you will find Bitcoin4U machines just off the highway in Millet, and in Edmonton; heading south, in Balzac and Calgary.
Bills in, coins out
Paying with bills means the purchase never touches your bank account, and your coins are sent within minutes of confirming. As the "Not a cash ATM" sticker on the front says, money only goes in: the machine takes Canadian bills, and no debit or credit cards. To pay from your bank account instead, make an online Interac e-Transfer purchase; to turn coins into dollars, sell them online and the payout arrives by e-Transfer.
Questions about the lobby kiosk
What do I need in my pocket?
Canadian bills, and a wallet app set up on your phone before you arrive; if you have never had a wallet, our post on Bitcoin wallets explains how to choose and set one up. On a first purchase, unless you verified at home, also bring your government photo ID, since the identity check asks for a picture of it. That check is done once, on your phone, usually in under a minute, and then counts at every Bitcoin4U machine. Daily limits go up to $40,000.
A caller told me to pay a bill or a fine at this machine. Should I?
No. The red warning label below the screen says it plainly: government agencies and utilities do not accept payment in bitcoin. Hang up, then read about common scams, fake CRA and utility bill demands among them. The wallet you scan should always be your own (an exchange account in your own name counts too).
Save time in the lobby by completing your ID check at home, and look over today's rate and fee on the fees page before your visit.
