How to Buy Ethereum in Canada (2026 Guide)

To buy Ethereum in Canada, set up an Ethereum wallet you control, verify your identity once with a FINTRAC-registered seller, and pay in Canadian dollars. At Bitcoin4U, a non-custodial cryptocurrency exchange, you can buy Ethereum with Interac e-Transfer from $50. Your ETH is sent on Ethereum mainnet to your own wallet as soon as the e-Transfer is deposited and matches your order, at any hour of the day or night. Ethereum orders are not batched, and Bitcoin4U pays the network gas, so you receive the full amount of ETH shown on your order.

For $25,000 or more, you can buy ETH by wire transfer, and every Bitcoin4U ATM sells Ethereum for cash. Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Flexepin purchases are for Bitcoin only.

Ethereum and ETH in brief

Ethereum is a blockchain, launched in 2015, that runs smart contracts. Its native currency is ether (ETH), which most people simply call Ethereum, and ETH pays the network's transaction fees, known as gas fees. Ethereum moved to proof-of-stake on 15 September 2022, in the upgrade known as the Merge, and adds a block about every 12 seconds. You can buy a fraction of a coin. The price moves quickly; this guide explains how buying works and is not financial advice.

What you need before you buy Ethereum

  • A mobile phone; Bitcoin4U needs one for every purchase.
  • An Ethereum address in your own name: a wallet you control, or an exchange account in your own name.
  • A Canadian bank account, or Canadian bills for an ATM.
  • Government-issued photo ID.

Bitcoin4U serves Canadian residents and, as a FINTRAC-registered money services business, verifies your identity once, before your first purchase. It is done on your phone with your ID, a selfie, your occupation, address and contact details, and typically takes under a minute. You can verify ahead of time; see the documents we accept.

How to buy Ethereum with Interac e-Transfer

Over 250 Canadian banks and credit unions offer Interac e-Transfer; most deliver one within minutes, some take up to 30 minutes.

  1. Open the Buy Ethereum with e-Transfer page and enter your mobile number.
  2. Enter the amount in Canadian dollars, $50 or more, and paste your Ethereum address.
  3. Verify your identity if this is your first purchase.
  4. Check the quote: the rate, the ETH you will receive and the flat fee in Canadian dollars.
  5. Enter the code we text you and press "Finalize purchase". That locks the price for 60 minutes and shows you the e-Transfer details.
  6. Send the e-Transfer for the exact amount from a bank account in your own name.
  7. Your ETH is sent as soon as the deposit matches your order, and your receipt email carries the transaction ID.

Unlike Bitcoin, Ethereum has no delivery-speed choice and no send queue. If your e-Transfer lands after the 60 minutes, the ETH amount is recalculated at the rate when it arrives. An e-Transfer for a different amount is not processed automatically: you are emailed the next step. A payment from an account not in your name is reviewed by a person before anything is sent.

How to buy Ethereum by wire transfer

A wire suits purchases of $25,000 to $100,000 per transaction, one wire per month, and is handled by request:

  1. Submit the wire transfer request form, choosing ETH and entering the amount and your Ethereum address.
  2. Bitcoin4U reviews it, confirms any extra verification and emails wire instructions with an indicative quote.
  3. Send the wire from your own bank account. It can take up to three days to arrive.
  4. When it lands, you get a secure link to lock a live rate. Nothing is bought until you accept it.
  5. Your ETH is sent within minutes of the rate being accepted during business hours.

How to buy Ethereum with cash at a Bitcoin ATM

Every Bitcoin4U ATM sells Ethereum, along with Bitcoin, Litecoin, Solana, XRP and USD Coin, so any machine on the ATM locator will do.

  1. Verify your identity once on your phone; you can pre-register before you go.
  2. Select Ethereum on the screen. The machine shows its rate at the start of the transaction and locks it in at that point.
  3. Scan the QR code of your Ethereum wallet's receiving address.
  4. Insert your Canadian bills and confirm.

Your ETH is sent straight away; only Bitcoin bought at an ATM goes out in a batch. The machines do not print receipts: yours is emailed to the address on your account, and with no email address on file you can request it on our website under Get a receipt. The ATMs are buy-only. See finding the nearest ATM for Ethereum for what to bring.

Ethereum mainnet, Layer 2 and your 0x address

Bitcoin4U sends ETH on the Ethereum mainnet (Layer 1) only. Layer 2 networks such as Arbitrum, Base and Optimism, and sidechains such as Polygon, use the same 0x address format, so an address you use on one of them looks exactly like a mainnet address.

What you enterAccepted?
A 42-character address starting with 0x, in its mixed-case (checksummed) formYes
The same address typed all in lowercase or all in uppercaseNo: paste the mixed-case form your wallet shows; an all-lowercase address is rejected even when pasted
An ENS name such as name.ethNo
The Ethereum deposit address of an exchange account in your own nameYes; some exchanges label this network option ERC-20
A memo or destination tagNot needed

In a regular self-custody wallet, one address works on all of these networks: switch the wallet to Ethereum to see your purchase. An exchange account or a smart-contract wallet may not credit ETH that arrives on a network it does not support, so check that the address accepts deposits on Ethereum mainnet. ETH itself is Ethereum's native coin, not an ERC-20 token; USD Coin, which Bitcoin4U also sells, is an ERC-20 token and is sent on Ethereum too.

Who pays the Ethereum gas fee?

The sender of an Ethereum transaction pays its gas, in ETH. When you buy from Bitcoin4U, the gas comes out of Bitcoin4U's own wallet, not out of your ETH, so you receive the full amount on your order. On an e-Transfer purchase, a flat fee in Canadian dollars is part of your total and shows on the confirmation screen before you press "Finalize purchase". When you later send ETH or a token from your wallet, you pay the gas yourself, so keep a little ETH there.

Choosing an Ethereum wallet

Bitcoin4U never holds your ETH, so you need a receiving address before you buy:

  • Mobile and browser-extension wallets are free and suit a first purchase; a mobile wallet also shows the QR code an ATM scans.
  • Hardware wallets keep your keys offline, for larger amounts.
  • An exchange account in your own name works too, but the exchange holds the keys.

Write the recovery phrase down and keep it offline: nobody can recover your ETH if you lose it. Bitcoin4U does not recommend a specific wallet. See what a non-custodial wallet is and choosing a crypto wallet in Canada.

Staking the ETH you buy

Since the Merge, staked ETH is what secures Ethereum, and holders can stake theirs to earn rewards. Running your own validator takes 32 ETH, so smaller amounts usually go through a third-party service. Rewards are not guaranteed, a validator that breaks the rules can lose part of its stake, and a third party adds its own risk. Bitcoin4U does not offer staking.

Buy Ethereum safely

Only buy ETH for yourself. Ethereum transactions cannot be reversed. Stop if:

  • Someone you met online, or a "broker", tells you to buy ETH and send it to them or to an investment site.
  • A caller claiming to be the CRA, the police or your bank demands payment in cryptocurrency.
  • A site offers a free token "airdrop" and asks you to connect your wallet and approve a transaction; a malicious approval can empty your wallet.
  • Anyone asks for your recovery phrase.

Watch for address poisoning, too: scammers send a tiny transaction from a lookalike address, hoping you later copy it from your history. Copy your address from your wallet's receive screen. Bitcoin4U does not make outbound phone calls, and its emails only come from addresses ending in @bitcoin4u.ca. Read our guide to common cryptocurrency scams.

After you buy: records, tax and selling

Keep a record of each purchase; the receipt emailed to the address on your account has the transaction ID, and with no email on file you can request it under Get a receipt. The Canada Revenue Agency generally treats cryptocurrency like a commodity for income tax, and selling, swapping or spending it, or receiving staking rewards, can be taxable. See is crypto legal in Canada. Bitcoin4U buys back only Bitcoin, which you can sell online for an Interac e-Transfer, so it offers no way to sell ETH.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you buy Ethereum in Canada?

Yes. Buying, holding and selling Ethereum is legal in Canada, and any business that exchanges it for people in Canada must be registered with FINTRAC. Bitcoin4U is registered (M19742234) and sells ETH by Interac e-Transfer from $50, by wire transfer for $25,000 or more, and for cash at every Bitcoin4U ATM.

How do I buy Ethereum with Interac e-Transfer in Canada?

Enter your mobile number, the amount and your Ethereum address on the Buy Ethereum with e-Transfer page, verify your identity once, enter the code we text you and press "Finalize purchase". Send the e-Transfer for the exact amount from a bank account in your own name. Your ETH is sent automatically, day or night, as soon as the deposit matches your order.

Can Bitcoin4U send ETH to Arbitrum, Base or another Layer 2 network?

No. Bitcoin4U sends ETH on the Ethereum mainnet (Layer 1) only. Enter a 42-character 0x address in its mixed-case (checksummed) form; ENS names are not accepted, and no memo or tag is needed. If you are sending to an exchange account in your own name, choose its Ethereum network deposit option, sometimes labelled ERC-20.

Who pays the gas fee when I buy Ethereum?

Bitcoin4U does. The gas is paid from Bitcoin4U's own wallet, so it is not deducted from your ETH and you receive the full amount on your order. On an e-Transfer purchase, a flat fee in Canadian dollars is part of your total and appears on the confirmation screen before you press "Finalize purchase".

How long does it take to receive Ethereum after I pay?

Usually minutes. Ethereum orders are sent as soon as your e-Transfer is deposited and matches your order; they are not batched. Ethereum adds a block about every 12 seconds, so the transaction usually confirms within a minute or two. Most banks deliver an e-Transfer within a few minutes, and a few take up to 30 minutes.

Can I buy Ethereum with cash at a Bitcoin ATM?

Yes. Every Bitcoin4U ATM sells Ethereum for Canadian cash. Select Ethereum, check the rate shown at the start, which is locked in at that point, then scan your wallet's QR code and insert your bills. Your ETH is sent straight away, and your receipt is emailed to the address on your account; if none arrives, request it on our website under Get a receipt. The machines are buy-only.

Can I buy Ethereum with a credit card or Flexepin in Canada?

Not at Bitcoin4U. Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Flexepin purchases are for Bitcoin only. To buy Ethereum, pay by Interac e-Transfer from a bank account in your own name, wire $25,000 or more by request, or use cash at a Bitcoin4U ATM. All three send the ETH straight to your own wallet.

Is buying Ethereum the same as buying an Ethereum ETF?

No. An Ethereum ETF is a fund bought through a brokerage account: it follows the price, but you do not hold ETH or its keys and cannot send it to a wallet. Buying ETH from a non-custodial cryptocurrency exchange such as Bitcoin4U puts the coins in a wallet you control, ready to hold, send or use.
